頭が下がる (Atama ga sagaru)

Literal Translation: “One’s head falls down.”

Meaning and Usage:

  • 相手の行動にとても感心して尊敬の気持ちが自然に起こること。(To admire and respect greatly someone’s behavior.)
    • *「頭を下げる」はお辞儀をする、または降参するという意味。Don’t mix up with “Atama wo sageru” which means to bow or to give up.

Examples:

  • 毎日、公園のゴミ拾いをしている老人には頭が下がる。(I admire the elderly person who is cleaning and picking up trash at the park everyday.)
