Funny story! I'm so used to the buttons now that I get annoyed when I go back to the States and the server is coming by every few minutes.

I went to a Japanese restaurant in Eugene, OR and kept thinking "The waitress sure doesn't come to the table very often to see if we need anything, in fact, she doesn't come at all..." Then I noticed each table had a call button! The bathrooms also had the fancy Japanese toilets with various buttons and heated seats. I was quite surprised.

One of our sword teachers in Tokyo (a bald gaijin gone very, very native that the webadmin is familiar with...) prefers the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy method -- always carry a towel.

So I presume from his advice to us anyway. He may not have mentioned HGTTG though.. ^_^

After taking Japanese in college, I bow when shaking hands with anyone. We had a very strict Korean teacher who made us practice bowing everyday in class while we were speaking. :)
